Medicare Eligibility Requirements

 

Initial Medicare Enrollment Period for those retiring at 65

If you’re retiring at age 65, your Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare Parts A, B, C and D is a 7-month period that includes:

  • The 3 months before your 65th birthday month
  • Your birthday month
  • The 3 months after your birthday month


During your Initial Enrollment Period, you should:

  • First enroll in both Part A and Part B
  • Choose Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Part D prescription drug coverage

Late Enrollment Penalties for Medicare Part B and Part D

If you do not enroll in Medicare Part B and Part D when you first become eligible for this coverage, you may have to pay a penalty if you enroll for these benefits later.
